Look at our city. Everywhere you look there’s a mosque, next to a church, next to a synagogue. The buildings exist, side by side. If only the people who pray in them could do the same.

Background
We were approached by Beyond Srebrenica, a Scottish Charity dedicated to learning the lessons of the Srebrenica Genocide of 1995. They wanted to educate young people on the events in Srebrenica and help them consider how we can all play our part in tackling hate and division in society.
For Collingwood, this was an extraordinary opportunity to tackle vital yet sensitive and emotive topic which is as relevant today as ever and goes to the heart of our shared humanity.

The Approach
For us and our partners at Beyond Srebrenica, the most powerful educational experiences come from telling authentic stories. To do that we travelled to both Sarajevo and Srebrenica itself to understand the complexities of the conflict and hear testimonies from survivors who witnessed the seeds of division being sown, to the full-scale collapse of society and subsequent atrocities visited on whole communities at that time. This visceral experience led us to create a live theatre piece that weaved these
stories together into the lives of three young people on different sides of the conflict, how it impacted their families, relationships, and their own humanity as a result. Set in a generic Scottish town, our goal was to challenge the audience to consider ‘is this real?’ Then in the workshop we reveal the tragic reality of the source material, explore the ten stages of genocide, and consider how we can prevent extremism and prejudice today to ensure the events of Srebrenica are never repeated again.

I felt that this was an exceptional experience for the pupils. The theatre element was incredibly moving.

Dead End is particularly effective as a means of communicating with Year 11 students, who have proved highly receptive to this sophisticated and emotive approach.
