One of them grabs at my legs and he’s strong. I feel hands all over me, fingers in my hair. Then I think I must black out.

Background
We were approached by Bradford Council to help them develop a powerful training experience for elected members, around domestic abuse.
By working with survivors of abuse to tell their stories on film, the project became a national online resource used by thousands every year.

The Approach
Our approach to that single event was to innovate on previous live, actor led events we had run. To change up our approach we were pleased to work with three survivors of domestic violence, who were willing to share their stories. We scripted these brave testimonies so that they were anonymous and created three video monologues using actors to tell their stories to learners. So compelling were the ‘real safeguarding stories’, they became fantastic tools to raise awareness of the issues, for learners to
identify the missed opportunities to intervene, and ways in which professionals can develop more robust practice. Real Safeguarding Stories has since become a YouTube channel of over 30 films, all inspired by the lived experiences of survivors of many forms of abuse. Real Safeguarding Stories Live inspires learning in face to face settings using actor led monologues, as always, placing the lived experiences of victims at the heart of the learning.
