Why is Safer Internet Day important, and how does it align with Collingwood Learning’s approach to online privacy and security?

Safer Internet Day was on 11th February this year and may have passed unnoticed by many. However, as Collingwood Learning’s IT Manager, every day is Safer Internet Day for me!

IT professionals constantly strive to keep users and systems safe from cyber theft, malware, viruses, and phishing threats.

Collingwood Learning, is traditionally an education company offering live experiences. However we are increasingly moving into digital markets, providing learning resources to young people through online IT platforms.

As a company, we use various online platforms. Smashed Online (a global alcohol education program) and Split Second (a road safety program) are e-learning based products. My Hometown is an international Holocaust education project with an online gallery.

Ensuring the integrity of these platforms and the safety of their users is crucial. My role involves managing, updating, and monitoring our online presence and digital education platforms. The aim being to provide a safe and secure experience for all.

Since starting this role, my goal has been to make these processes as risk-free as possible. To be trusted as an education provider for young people, we need robust systems in place.

What are the biggest online security risks for organisations like ours, and how do we protect against potential threats?

Like most companies today, we constantly use digital platforms to meet our business needs. I frequently provide training on protecting against the latest threats, making users aware of potential pitfalls and mitigation strategies.

We face digital threats from cyber criminals seeking to access our data and platforms for personal gain or malicious destruction.

Our company has a strong Accessibility Policy, allowing basic access to specific files and folders. This is closely managed, documented, and reported. Similarly, our Leavers, Joiners and Movers Policy allows me to monitor and review system and data access.

Collingwood has achieved Cyber Essentials accreditation, confirming our systems and processes align with NCSC guidelines. We continue to improve and aim for higher accreditation levels.

“Looking at web accessibility, online security, and privacy together, we can create more inclusive and safer digital environments for all.”

How does our commitment to web accessibility connect with security and privacy, is it important to consider them together?

Web accessibility, online security, and privacy are interconnected and essential for a safe, inclusive digital environment.

Security measures like multi-factor authentication must be accessible to all users, including those with disabilities, ensuring secure access without barriers.

As a Disability Confident Employer, we are enhancing our digital accessibility. We are remodeling our websites to include text alternatives, voice recognition, and simplified content where appropriate. Collaborating with DWP, our users have attended seminars and workshops focused on digital accessibility.

“Conflictingly, one way that we protect our user data is by not actually collecting any!””

What steps do we take to protect sensitive data while maintaining an inclusive, user-friendly digital experience for all?

IT professionals use various technical methods to protect users and data. All our accounts have Multi-Factor Authentication enabled, and we follow a strict Leavers, Movers, and Joiners policy. Our devices run up-to-date antivirus and malware protection.

A key aspect of keeping our network and users safe is fostering a culture of openness. We provide a forum for users to ask questions, express concerns, and share ideas. Regular training ensures users are aware of potential issues and what to look out for.

On our Smashed Online platform, we collect limited data, ensuring no personal details of young people are gathered. Over 1 million online sessions have been completed anonymously. This still allows us to evaluate and report on the success of our global online platforms.
