He just gets off his head sometimes. I suppose it’s keeping up with Freddie, he kind of looks up to him. He’s got a lot going on at the moment. Loads of pressure with school and stuff.

Background

In 2009 Collingwood had the opportunity to develop a pilot alcohol education project in UK schools. Whilst we knew that by 15 years of age, 85% of young people were drinking or had drunk alcohol, there was very little educational provision on the topic.

This often-overlooked, multi-generational issue had significant implications for young people, with teachers telling us they struggled to teach alcohol education in a meaningful way, given its cultural place in society.

The Approach

Our starting point was to consult young people in local schools on their experiences and motivations to change behaviour. The result was a slick, fast moving theatre performance that explored the social and health impacts of drinking alcohol, societal and social influence, and where to turn for help. Coupled with an interactive workshop to consolidate the learning, Smashed Live was born. Subsequent tours of UK schools demonstrated significant increases in awareness amongst students, and teachers reported how it increased their confidence to talk about alcohol with young people.

That was only the start of an incredible journey. Working with our sponsors Diageo, we teamed up with international delivery partners and education ministries to culturally and linguistically translate the programme for new countries. This sparked huge growth for Smashed LIVE, which is now delivered in 38 countries and last year reached over 1m young people. Today, we select, develop, and manage our international partner organisations, oversee programme delivery, and manage an extensive quality assurance process.

Fantastic experience for students and staff. So well delivered and the workshop section really got the kids thinking about their own choices.
