Seconds can just change your life. Like that. I never even noticed her step into the road; I was too busy looking down at her phone. If I hadn’t, I might have seen what was happening and pulled her back.

Background

West Yorkshire Vision Zero Partnership believe that no death or serious injury is acceptable on the roads and are working to reduce road danger across the region. Their mission is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured (KSI) on the roads by 50% by 2030, and to zero by 2040.  The role of Collingwood in delivering on the West Yorkshire Vision Zero pillars of action is to educate young people to

become safe road users by adopting behaviours that allow them to enjoy healthy and equitable mobility in their lives. Our solution was Split Second, an interactive theatre performance and workshop designed to address the key road safety dangers which are particularly relevant to 11 – 13 year olds, as they transition to secondary school and become more independent.

The Approach

Our innovative road safety programme combined a dynamic theatre performance with interactive workshops and e-learning resources to engage young people in a meaningful way. The live performance captured the excitement and challenges of their age group, highlighting how social dynamics and distractions contributed to risky behaviour on the roads. In the workshop, students took on the role of director, reshaping critical moments in the play to encourage positive decision-making—giving them a ‘rehearsal’ for real-life scenarios.

To embed learning beyond the event, we developed an e-learning resource that enabled teachers to revisit key moments through short films, encouraging deeper exploration over time. We were mindful of avoiding fear-based messaging, instead creating a relatable and empowering experience that connected emerging self-identity with healthy behaviours. This approach ensured students not only understood the risks but felt confident in making safer choices.

The show was fantastic! The enthusiasm of the performance really got the kids engaged. It was relatable and tapped into everyday scenarios that they’re experiencing.
