Read our latest blog post: Travel Hacks Road Safety
Background
Road safety is a pressing concern for young people navigating an increasingly complex world. As teenagers gain greater independence – walking to school, cycling with friends, taking public transport, or travelling as car passengers – the decisions they make on and around the road can have life-changing consequences.
Our teams already have been delivering road safety education to Year 7 and Year 11 students, recognising that different stages of teenage life require different approaches. At Year 7, theatre brings the issues to life for younger students encountering new independence for the first time
At Year 11, powerful and mature monologues (based on real life situations) speak to students on the cusp of adulthood. But Year 9 represented a critical gap – an age where social influence is at its peak, independent travel is increasing, and risk-taking behaviours are most likely to emerge.
Travel Hacks was commissioned by Safer Essex Roads Partnership to bridge that gap and ensure young people receive meaningful road safety education at every stage of their teenage years. For Year 9, the approach needed to be different: energetic, practical, and student-driven – a positive, empowering experience that meets young people where they are, reflects their social world, and equips them with the confidence to make smarter choices on the road.

The Approach
Unlike live theatre, Travel Hacks is designed to be simple for schools to implement, requiring no complex logistics and stage. Produced using green screen technology, the filmed content places students in vivid, authentic travel settings, making the learning as immersive and engaging as possible.
A single experienced Collingwood facilitator delivers the session to a whole year group within a standard one-hour slot, making it straightforward for schools to embed into their timetable. At the heart of the programme is student voice. Rather than presenting young people with answers, Travel Hacks is built around discussion, giving students the space to identify the challenges they face as road users every day and work through solutions together.
This peer-driven approach is deliberate: when young people arrive at conclusions themselves, through their own conversations and reflections, the impact is deeper and the behaviour change more meaningful and lasting
Key learning themes:
• Staying focused
• Peer pressure
• Speaking up
• Passenger behaviour
• Making a safe plan
