New Developments in Road Safety at Collingwood

Collingwood Learning believe that road safety education is vital for protecting the lives of young people and building safer communities, and in 2025 we will be introducing new work supporting Vision Zero initiatives.

In this blog Katy May, our Business Development Director, talks about Dead End and Split Second, projects that will lead the way in keeping young people safe on the roads.

Dead End: Powerful Lessons on Road Safety

Our Dead End programme, tailored for Year 11 – 13 students, has been a game-changer in road safety education. By using immersive storytelling and real-life scenarios, Dead End helps students understand the serious consequences of Fatal 4: distraction, speeding, drink/drug-driving and not wearing the seat belt. During the interactive workshop the students get an opportunity to replay some scenes from the performance and learn to tackle peer pressure by making healthier choices.

“Connect with young people on a personal level, through sharing the lived experiences of victims.”

A Programme That Resonates

“I think the programme’s success lies in its ability to connect with young people on a personal level, through sharing the lived experiences of victims and those close to them. This makes for a very ‘mature’ learning experience that doesn’t talk down to young adults, motivating them to think critically about their choices as young drivers or passengers.”

Over 70,000 students have now taken part in Dead End, and we have recently completed an incredibly well-received 5-week tour of Essex schools. The project is supported by the Safer Essex Roads Partnership as a part of their Vizion Zero programme. You can learn more about the impact of Dead End here.

Introducing Split Second: A New Road Safety Journey

I’m thrilled to announce Split Second, our new theatre and multi-media road safety initiative aimed at Year 7 students launches in schools in 2025. Sponsored by West Yorkshire Vision Zero Partnership, Split Second is designed to make a lasting impression on younger students, helping them navigate early encounters with risk on the roads.

Split Second will focus on key issues relevant to this age group, such as pedestrian and cyclist safety, distractions like mobile phones, and understanding the importance of making safe decisions. We want to install lifelong habits that will contribute to West Yorkshire Vision Zero’s ambitious goal of eliminating road deaths and serious injuries. The team are also developing some unique e-learning follow-on resources to help teachers really embed the learning after our visit.

Collingwood at the National Road Safety Conference

Few weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the National Road Safety Conference (November 6-8, 2024). The event was an incredible opportunity to see the inspiring work being done across the country, with innovative projects and strategies addressing road safety challenges.

The potential collaborations and new approaches we explored during the conference will no doubt strengthen our future projects. Stay tuned for updates as we continue these conversations and build on this momentum!

“We came away energized and filled with ideas after participating in thought-provoking discussions and networking with fellow road safety advocates”

Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision for Safer Roads

Collingwood Learning is proud to be at the forefront of road safety education. From the hard-hitting reality of Dead End to the proactive and preventative focus of Split Second, we are committed to making a difference. Vision Zero is an exciting new development in road safety education as it is about promoting healthy, positive attitudes towards travel and transport and our goal is to help young people visualise what that means in practice for them, rather than a fear-based approach which can cause them to switch off and disengage.

We want to partner with schools, regional and national partners to work towards a future where young people can thrive on safer roads. I’m really excited about the road safety agenda in coming years and committed to Collingwood playing our part in it.
