“We’re proud of the reach, but more proud of the impact. Conversations are being started. Perspectives are being changed. And the memory of those lost at Srebrenica is being honoured in classrooms across the country.”

Beyond Srebrenica
Background
Since its launch in 2023, Inseparable Live, commissioned by Beyond Srebrenica and created by Collingwood Learning – has reached over 10,000 students across Scottish schools.
The live programme combines theatre, workshop and teaching resources to help young people understand the Srebrenica Genocide of 1995 and consider how they can play a role in challenging hate and division today.
Powerful as live theatre is, it has an inherent limitation in that it can only go where a touring team can physically travel.
In recognising that the stories, learning, and importance of this subject shouldn’t be confined by geography or logistics, the next logical step was to take Inseparable online.

The Approach
Inseparable Online was born directly from the live programme, not as a compromise but as an evolution. The platform is built around a filmed performance of the original play, preserving the emotional core of the experience.
From there, teachers and youth practitioners guide students through a structured digital journey using clear online prompts to lead discussion and activities in real time, making it a genuinely interactive classroom experience, rather than a passive screen time.
The course is structured across two 60-minute lessons (with bite-sized module options), designed for learners aged 14 and above.
The same deliberate approach from the live show is preserved: students experience the play without initially being made aware of its connection to Bosnia, with this revelation saved for afterwards to deepen empathy and prompt authentic reflection.
Lesson 1 takes students through the story itself – experiencing the play, exploring the issues it raises, uncovering the historical facts, and connecting those facts to their own lives.
Lesson 2 deepens the learning: students hear directly from real survivors, examine the importance of language in the escalation of violence, work through the ten stages of genocide, and are challenged to consider what they personally can do.
The resource is entirely free to access, commissioned by Beyond Srebrenica and funded by the Gordon Cook Foundation

Impact
Inseparable Online has been designed with flexibility across multiple contexts.
For Scottish schools, it maps to S4–S6 across:
More broadly across the UK and beyond, it supports themes of equality, human rights, global citizenship, genocide studies, and tackling prejudice, making it relevant far beyond any single national curriculum.
By bringing Inseparable into the digital space, Collingwood and Beyond Srebrenica ensure that students who may never see a touring theatre company can still encounter these stories, ask the questions, and leave better equipped to recognise and resist the warning signs of division and hatred.
